(Song: E.S. Posthumus - Harappa)
Vanessa paced the length of her room in her parent’s house. Both of her parents were at work, which meant no one was trying to quiet the annoying cries of the infant girl that lay in the nursery down the hall. When the wails grew louder, Vanessa muttered to herself and tugged at her hair as if that would make the sounds go away.
Lately it seemed as if all the baby did was cry. It was an endless sound, at any time of the day. In the morning when people were still sleeping, in the afternoon when people were busy with other things and at night when people were trying to get to sleep. Over and over again, varying in pitch but always relentless. Wail…wail…wail!
Once more the wailing grew in pitch, prompting Vanessa to whirl towards the door with a screech, “Shut up already! No one wants to listen to your whining!”
As if on cue the sounds stopped, plunging the house into silence except for the soft sound of Vanessa’s labored breathing. She continued to glare at the door as if daring the sounds to start again. When no sounds came after a few minutes, she unfurled her fists and relaxed her shoulders before making her way to her bed. Sinking down on the edge of it, she ran shaking hands through her already messy hair while trying to calm her breathing.
“Okay,” she muttered. “Okay, you’ve got to get it together Vanessa. Do it just like the doctor said when you start to feel strange. Take deep breaths.”
She took a deep breath, held it, then let it out before repeating the process a couple of times. “Come on, you can do it. Just calm yourself.”
She continued to take deep breaths, slowly calming herself down with each exhalation until she didn’t feel so strange anymore. She scrubbed her hands over her face, trying to wipe away the rest of the strange emotions that had been boiling inside of her. Once she felt like herself again, she rose to her feet then went to the attached bathroom.
Quickly she cleaned up a bit until she felt somewhat refreshed before leaving her bedroom entirely. Walking down the hallway, she came to a stop in front of the nursery door and as quietly as she could, opened it to peer inside.
She could hear her daughter cooing from her crib which brought a smile to her face. She glided to the crib and leaned over, her smile widening as she saw her infant daughter gazing up at her with wide hazel eyes.
“Hello precious. Did you have a good nap?”
The baby gurgled happily as her little hands waved in the air.
“That’s good sweetheart. Come on now, mommy’s gonna clean you up and then get you something to eat.” She reached into the crib, gently taking her daughter into her arms to hold her close to her chest.
The baby continued to coo happily as Vanessa walked over to the changing table where she efficiently changed both the diaper and Onesie that the baby was wearing. Once she had cleared the area of all messes and had her daughter dressed again, Vanessa took her daughter back into her arms. Cradling her precious bundle close to her, she walked out of the nursery and headed to the kitchen.
Once she had finished preparing a bottle, she went to living room to sit in the rocker there. Beaming down at her daughter as she fed her, Vanessa spoke to her in a baby voice.
“That’s it sweetheart. Drink up. You have nothing to worry about today. Mommy has everything under control.” The baby continued to drink the formula as Vanessa sat back and looked around the room. Her smile faded as she got a faraway look in her eyes, yet when the baby cooed it brought her concentration back. Setting aside the empty bottle, she moved her daughter up to her shoulder to gently burp her. The baby let out a healthy burp before gurgling happily against her shoulder.
Vanessa rocked her daughter as she rubbed small circles on her back, comforting her baby. Once again her gaze went far away as a twisted smile curled over one side of her face.
“There, there my sweetheart. Never fear. Mommy’s gonna make everything better for us. Soon.”

Jacob tried to keep his mind on driving as he made his way home from work. So much had happened in the last couple of weeks that his mind was still spinning from the events. The house that his mother had shown him and Bella had been brought with a down payment from both his parents and Bella’s as a late engagement present, yet the lease was under his and Bella’s name.
The moment it was signed, he and Bella had begun to move in which had been a little less than a week ago. On top of that, Bella was now in full wedding mode under the guidance of Renee and Sarah. Although he was glad to see that Bella was much happier and lighter on her feet lately, he knew he was just getting more and more moody. He tried to be as happy as Bella was since their life was moving forward together, but he just couldn’t shake the weight of everything that was bothering him.
He wondered when Bella was going to comment on the fact that he seemed to be focusing more and more on his work, so much so that he was leaving early in the morning, then returning home later than usual. Not only that, but he knew she had to notice other things he’d been doing in the recent days.
Take the new house for example. When they first went to see it, Bella had fallen in love with it immediately, Jacob had not. While the house was big enough and comfortable enough to raise a family in, Jacob had wanted something more modern looking. They were a young, enterprising couple after all, so why couldn’t they have moved into a more sleek, modern house. Something like a townhouse or condo, not the beautifully maintained classic Victorian that they had moved into.
He had tried to explain to Bella what he had envisioned for a first house, but she had sided with their parents. The house they had chosen was perfect for raising their future family in, plus why wait when that house was already available and within their price range. Bella had done the math, she knew she and Jacob could afford the payments on the house with their combined income. Nothing he could say could deter her, so in the end he had let both her and their parents convince him to sign on it.
He couldn’t really complain about the house. It did have plenty of bedrooms and the main rooms were large enough to fit their family during holidays and the like. Still, would it have mattered if they had started with something smaller than what they had moved into? He couldn’t help but feel the leash tightening around his neck when he had signed the lease with Bella, knowing that wasn’t a good thing.
Since then, his mind had been troubled, making him feel as if he were growing more distant from his fiancée. When they were together, he knew Bella had to feel as if he were not even listening to her since she often had to get his attention, then repeat whatever it was that she had just said to him moments ago. He really tried to pay attention to her, but he couldn’t make himself focus on the here and now, or muster up the same enthusiasm she had for planning their life together.
Heck, he even knew the intimacy with Bella wasn’t the same either and that was saying something. He had never had any problems paying attention to Bella when they were sharing a passionate moment, but lately he couldn’t even focus on making love to her. He knew that would be a low blow for Bella if she ever figured it out, but he just couldn’t seem to get into the moment anymore. That didn’t mean he had given up though, the last thing he ever wanted to do was give up on the relationship he shared with her.
She was his best friend and the love of his life, so he knew he had to get himself together or he would lose everything that mattered to him. Still, he couldn’t stop the panic attacks he occasionally had when he thought about his future with Bella, especially when he sometimes felt as if they were moving way too fast. He had thought Bella was on the same page as he was since they both had told their parents to lay off on the wedding planning, but then Bella saw the house and suddenly she seemed to be on their parents’ side, leaving Jacob feeling like the odd man out.
Now she was happily moving their things into the new house, shopping for furniture and other things for said house, plus planning a huge wedding for them. All of that on top of the job she still had with her father’s business made her a busy bee, yet she still seemed to have time to spend with him when he was home. She greeted him every day with a smile on her face and so much enthusiasm he was wondering just what was in the water she was drinking.
He couldn’t understand where all her enthusiasm was coming from when she worked almost the same hours he did, then spent hours shopping and planning with either Sarah or Renee. She was even finding time to decorate their new home because every time Jacob came home, there was a new piece of furniture or some other noticeable difference to the house’s interior. Being a guy, he didn’t get into interior decorating but even he could tell how the new house was looking more and more like a home instead of two empty stories full of empty rooms.
As he finally pulled up into their driveway, he parked his car and stared up at the house with some trepidation, wondering what new addition he’d notice this time. Briefly contemplating on returning to work, he swallowed down his apprehension and silently told himself to quit panicking over nothing.
That thought made him frown. He knew what the main factor was that fed his dour mood. He still hadn’t told Bella about his last encounter with Vanessa. Granted, he hadn’t run into her since then and there hadn’t been any mysterious phone calls, but he still couldn’t get their strange conversation out of his mind.
His father’s people were still keeping tabs on her while she seemed to still be attending the psychiatrist meetings, plus she and her daughter were still living with her parents. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary which prompted his father and Charlie to lay off the security guards even though the first thing they had done was amp up the new house with it’s own high-tech security system.
So why did he feel like his whole world was going to hell in a hand basket? Was it really Vanessa that was bothering him or was it something else?
(Song: Mythos - Alpha)
Letting out a resigned sigh, he reluctantly got out of the car, grabbed his briefcase, then made his way to the front door. Putting his key into the slot, he frowned when he realized that the door was unlocked. Bella was extremely lax with their security because she was having a bad habit of leaving doors unlocked lately. What was the point of having a top notch security system if they weren’t taking advantage of it?
Opening the door, he went inside and set his briefcase by the hall table before tossing his keys into the small dish that was on top of the table.
“Bells?” he called out, intending to find her and once again emphasize the importance of using the security system.
“In the living room,” came her response.
Upon entering the living room, Jacob found Bella sitting on the floor surrounded by a few boxes. She had been looking through one of them, but when he entered the room, she stood up with a grin before launching herself at him.
“There you are! I was wondering how late you would be working today.”
He leaned down to let her give him a kiss before she went on. “I can start dinner if you’re hungry.”
He shook his head. “Not just yet, okay?”
She nodded.
“So what’s all this?” He asked as he looked at all the boxes scattered around the room, forgetting about the issue of security for the moment.
She chuckled. “Our dads brought over the last of our things earlier today while I was out with Sarah and mom looking at wedding invitations.”
He jerked his head up. “Wedding invitations? We haven’t even set a date yet!”
Waving a hand in nonchalance, Bella responded. “I know that, but it doesn’t hurt to look at the different kinds of invitations that are out there.”
Jacob just stood there as Bella walked over to the box she had been sitting behind. She turned back to him with a huge smile on her face. “Oh Jake, I still can’t believe it’s all coming together so well! I mean, this house is such a dream come true, isn’t it? I was starting to get so frustrated looking at houses until Sarah showed me this one! Your mom is such a miracle worker sometimes, I swear!”
He tried to think of something nice to say to that, but Bella just continued on with her cheerful dialogue. “I’m still thrilled that Sarah found the perfect place for us to have our reception in! It even fits our theme and colors so well!”
Jacob’s eyes went wide. “Wait! We have a theme? When did that happen?”
Bella tsked at him. “Two days ago, silly! We were having dinner with our moms when we decided on both that and the colors!”
She frowned at him for a moment before the smile returned. “Anyway, Sarah and I think that a fall wedding will work best since that is usually the easiest time to rent that particular venue for the reception.”
“The fall? Bella, I thought we weren’t going to set a date yet!” Jacob exclaimed.
“We haven’t, Jacob. I didn’t say it would be this fall, just that it should be during the fall season.” Again she frowned at him. “What is with you lately? You haven’t been keeping up with everything I’ve been saying.”
He ran a flustered hand through his hair. “Sorry, you know work is kicking my ass right now.”
Bella stared at him for a moment, clearly looking like she didn’t believe that excuse at all. Then she smiled again and sat down behind the box. “Well, in any case, when we do get married, I think we should have a fall wedding.”
She reached into the box and pulled out a neatly folded quilt. Jacob watched as a wistful look spread over her face while her hand smoothed out the nonexistent wrinkles.
She sighed before speaking. “Mom made me this quilt when I was ten. When she gave it to me, she said someday, when I had my own daughter that we could add more to it, then give it to her. We’d make it into a family heirloom, you know? I’m so glad I’ve kept it all these years and that it’s still in great condition. I’d love to work on it with mom so I can give it to our daughter someday.”
Once again Jacob felt that familiar panic attack bubbling up inside of him. “Please tell me you’re not pregnant! I thought we were going to wait until we were married for a few years!”
Bella let the quilt drop back into the box and put her hands on her hips. “Geez, Jacob! No I’m not pregnant and we did agree on that! Really! Would you stop jumping to conclusions! I’m just telling you what I hope to do someday, that’s all! You know I want kids someday, but I’d like to concentrate on work for a while, same as you!”
(Song: Within Temptation - Angels)
Jacob scowled. “What did you expect me to think when you were looking at that quilt that way? And the way you are suddenly so enthusiastic about planning a wedding, when you said you didn’t want to even think about it for a while! I don’t know what to expect from you anymore! You keep saying one thing and then overnight you just give in to whatever our families say!”
Bella’s frown deepened as she rose to her feet. “I haven’t just given in Jacob! We’ve been looking at houses for a while now, but since we finally found one and moved in, that’s one less thing I have to worry about. So what if I’m looking at things for our wedding? We haven’t set a date and we don’t need one to just to come up with ideas of how we’d like it to be!
I get that my parents are pushing for us to make a date right now, but your parents aren’t! And I’m more inclined to agree with your parents! Sarah knows what she’s doing and she knows how to soothe my parents’ nerves. So we go out and look at invitations and venues and whatever else that has to do with weddings, doesn’t mean I’m walking down the aisle tomorrow!”
Her hands had been flailing all over the place halfway through her ranting which made Jacob realize that was the first time she had raised her voice that dramatically since she had been a teenager. Still, that thought quickly left him when he opened his mouth without thinking.
“Fine! So we’re not getting married tomorrow! I still don’t get why you have to do all this planning! Hell, I don’t even know why I let you talk me into buying this house! Why do we need all this room?” he yelled.
“Planning is what I do Jacob! It’s what I’ve always done for all parts of my life!”
“Well we didn’t need this huge of a house!”
“We do if we plan on having a family someday! It’s worth it to get this house now even though it will be a while before we become parents!”
“Really? You think it’s worth it? All this stress over planning out our lives instead of just living it! How do we even know we can do all of it? How do we know it’ll all be worth it in the end?”
“I just know, Jake! I’m looking forward to being a mom someday! I know I’ll be a good one too! So what if I concentrate on working for a few years? At least by the time I’m ready to have children, I’ll have accomplished most of what I want to do!”
“Not if you keep making other plans, you won’t! Do you even go to work anymore? ‘Cause you seem to be all over the city looking at things for the house or a wedding. In fact, that’s all I’ve heard you talking about these days! You haven’t said a damn thing about your job though!”
She gasped. “Of course I’m still working! We see each other at the office every day even if it’s for a few minutes! It’s called multitasking, Jacob! With your degree you should be proficient at it too!”
He gritted his teeth. “That’s not the point!”
She threw up her hands. “Then tell me what the point is because I can’t figure out what is making you so distant and grouchy these days.”
He narrowed his eyes, so she had noticed that after all then. Still, he knew he had to say something. “Look, can’t we just go back to the way things were? Simple! Just you and me and our jobs. Why do we have to fall into this stupid pattern of making a nest out of a house that we didn’t agree on, or planning a showboat of a wedding, or even talking about adding more mouths to feed to our family!”
Bella gaped at him. “If you hated the house this much why’d you sign the lease then?”
He pulled at his hair. “Because you were so happy about it!”
“That’s it? Come on, Jacob! We’re in this together, you know! If you didn’t like it, you should have said something!”
“I tried! You weren’t listening!” he groaned.
She folded her arms over her chest. “Well, I’m listening now. So what else don’t you like?”
Suddenly he felt like he was under a microscope, yet he couldn’t stop his mouth from spewing the things that had been bothering him for a while. “I don’t think it’s worth it to plan things when you never know what will happen in the future. I mean, why go through all that trouble when you can’t be certain. Nothing is set in stone.”
Bella shook her head. “You are not making any sense whatsoever!”
He growled. “Planning a wedding, even without a set date is useless in my opinion.”
Bella set her fists on her hips again. “Fine, your opinion is noted. And that is why you’re not doing any of the planning right now. I can do it with the help of our mothers.”
He rolled his eyes. “And thinking of kids. Why bother? I mean, after everything that’s happened to me, do you really think it’ll be worth it? I would have thought you would see how much those things get in the way and mess up the best laid plans that people make! Haven’t you learned anything from that?”
Bella gaped at him. “It wasn’t my mistake, Jacob Black! But yes, of course I learned from it! That’s why I’m careful! That’s why I don’t plan on having children until I know we are both ready for it! Are you really going to stand there and tell me that I haven’t learned from watching you deal with a mistake that was just a lie in the end?”
“No, I’m just saying that I’ve learned from it and I’m still learning from it! It’s made me realize that I’m not ready for that and I don’t think any of that is worth it. I don’t want that kind of thing to mess up my life! Not now, not ever!”
Bella’s hands fell to her side as she stared at him. “What are you saying?”
He gritted his jaw. “I’m saying I don’t think we should talk about getting married or having kids. I don’t think that should be a part of our lives at all right now. We should just do what we said we’d do when we started college.”
“We have done it, Jacob. We graduated college and now we’re moving on with our lives.”
“We haven’t even worked at our jobs for a few months yet and already you’re moving on! I thought it would be a few years before we brought a house like this let alone start talking marriage!”
“Then why did you ask me to marry you during Spring Break? If you’re not ready to get married, why even ask?”
He shrugged. “It just felt like the right thing to do.”
“What?” she whispered.
He threw his hands up. “What do you want me to say? People get engaged and then wait years before getting married all the time!”
She held up her hand, “So you wanted to wait years? Just how many exactly?”
“Ten, fifteen, hell if I know.”
She closed her eyes. “Oh my God! You didn’t even think it through, did you? You didn’t even mean it!”
Silence met her words. Slowly she opened her eyes to stare at him. “Why the hell did you ask me to marry you, Jacob Black?”
He looked away. “It seemed like the next step to take to be with you. Figured if I put a ring on your finger, you’d be happy to stay with me.”
Her eyes grew wider. “That’s it? You just…you just wanted to have a way to keep me in your bed. That’s it, isn’t it? That’s all you’ve ever wanted.”
Her words stung him to the core. Did she really think all he ever wanted was to sleep with her. Unable to stop himself, he shrugged. “Maybe. You know how much I’ve always liked sex.”
Out of the corner of his eyes, he watched as her lips trembled before she spun away from him and ran out of the room. Closing his eyes, he began to berate himself for saying things he never should have said. With a sigh, he walked towards the stairs that led to the bedrooms.
When he reached the master bedroom, he was surprised to find the door wide open, but he was even more shocked when he walked inside to find Bella tossing things into a suitcase.
“Bella? What are you doing?”
Without even looking up at him, she continued packing the suitcase. “What does it look like I’m doing?”
He shook his head. “No, don’t go like this. I’m sorry, okay. I’m just…”
“I know, Jacob. You’re angry and frustrated at the way life isn’t going the way you want it to. I get it. You’re still a boy, not ready for the responsibility of a family and all that. Believe me, I get it.”
He reached out for her. “That’s not what I meant, Bells.”
She yanked her arm away. “Don’t touch me! God Jacob! Don’t you think I know how differently we see things? You were always the playboy! Always wanting to play the field while having the least amount of responsibility that you could get away with. I was always the serious one, the one who had plans and dreams of what I wanted for my future. We never mixed, we should have known better than to try.”
She shut the suitcase, grabbed it then slid her shoes on. He tried to get her to look at him, to see that he didn’t want her to leave.
“Bella, where are you going?”
“To my parents.” She pushed past him, stopping long enough to set the engagement ring on the dresser. “I’m sure it won’t be hard for Sarah or Billy to figure out how to get us out of the lease for this house. That kind of thing isn’t new to them.”
With those heated words, she walked out of the house and out of his life.

(Song: Evanescence - Field of Innocence)
Bella sat curled up in the chair by the balcony, watching the patterns the rain made against the glass. It was now late at night, long after she had done all the crying her body had allowed her too. Her parents had gone to sleep hours ago, which was fine with her.
Earlier that night she had simply showed up with her suitcase, telling them she and Jacob had a fight, so could she stay in her old room for the night at least. Neither one of them had said a word other than to say if she needed to talk, she knew where to find them. She was glad they had left her alone so she could go to her room where she had thrown herself on the bed and cried herself to sleep.
She had slept through the beginning of the rain, but the thunder had finally woken her up from her fitful sleep. Unable to lie there, she got up to curl into her chair to watch the rain falling against the balcony door. The sounds of the rain soothed her battered heart as she thought about the things she and Jacob had said to each other as they had fought.
Ever since Sarah and Renee had introduced the house to them, he had grown distant and his mind always seemed to be elsewhere when they were together. At first she just blamed it on their ever-stressful jobs but when she began to notice how he wasn’t even paying attention to her during their lovemaking, she knew there was something more serious going on.
She had hoped that she was wrong, but when he came home and lit into her without even a ‘hi honey, I’m home’ she knew it was bad. She had tried not to believe that sex meant that much to Jacob, but deep down she knew it was. He may not have slept with tons of girls, but Bella knew he liked it a lot. Sure, she did too, but she wasn’t going to lie and say that she saw it the same way he did.
For her, no matter how many times she slept with Jacob, it always seemed to get better and better. For Jacob, it was an ‘in the moment’ thing. He never looked beyond the moment, whether it was sex or anything else in his life. That was why Bella was the planner and he wasn’t. Bella knew Jacob would be happiest if he could live his life flying by the seat of his pants.
Granted, she understood that all those plans they had been heaping on Jacob lately, was making him feel like he was a caged animal when he was meant to run free. She should have known better than to give in to her parents with the house and the wedding planning. She knew she should have paced things much slower, but she couldn’t help it. Not when doing all those things made her feel so happy.
While Jacob would have been happier just living life, she had been happier making those plans for the rest of their life together. She wanted that dream that she’d once had as a little girl. The big house with the white picket fence. The loving spouse and bundle of kids.
For a while there, she had believed Jacob had wanted the same things. He had proposed to her after all. He had told her that he loved her. They had shared so much together, and everything he had done since they had become a couple had fooled her into thinking he was on the same page as she was.
Maybe things would be better if she and Jacob could go back to the way things were in the beginning, when they had first admitted their love to each other and started dating exclusively. Maybe she could try to be as laidback and free as Jacob seemed to be.
Maybe pigs would fly.
She knew she was only fooling herself. Her dreams were different than his. They always had been and always would be. She would only be deluding herself if she believed either one of them could change to fit the other.
It hurt to know that they weren’t compatible like she had hoped and she knew it would continue to hurt for a while since they had to work with each other. Still, she was a big girl, so she vowed to herself that no matter what, she would get over it and move on. She would concentrate on her work for a while until her heart mended, then maybe she would find someone else who shared her dreams. Maybe someday she would meet someone who would be all that she had once hoped Jacob would be for her.
Watching the rain fall against the glass, she imagined all of her dreams were washing away with it. They were rushing away from her, leaving nothing but bitter tears that continued to fall down her face to splash against her trembling limbs.
She knew she could never go back to believing in dreams that no longer existed.
